The following are video projects I've been involved with in the past few years. I could give you hundreds of hours of video's from my days as a news photog at WIFR TV...from the early 1990' s ...Yeah...Thought you might be a wee bit more interested in what I've done lately. One of my best traits is my ability to learn equipment and programs....bring em' on! My 'current' self can run circles around what I was doing back in the 90's anyway! If you really want to see some of my 1990's footage...I've included that here as well. Most recently, I am the Collier County Bureau Photojournalist for WFTX Fox4 news in Naples Florida. I'll include a couple videos of my recent work.

WIFR TV (CBS) News Reel Demo 1990-91
Video shot during my time as a Videographer / Photojournalist at WIFR-TV (CBS) Rockford, IL. Video was originally shot on an Ikegami ITC730a camera (with 3/4" deck) between 1/90 and 10/91. Footage includes a story on Gulf War t-shirts (Rose Terhark), Rockford School District (Colleen Burns) , an early morning business district fire (Bill McGinty), damage done by a tornado touch down near the state line (Same one that struck Plainfield that same day 8/28/90), Rockford School District Cuts (Tony Thomas). Sports footage includes the Rockford Lightning (Basketball) and the Illinois Thunder (Soccer) in their inaugural season. Interviews are telescoped for brevity. Footage had been stored on a VHS tape and was starting to deteriorate. |

FCP X Demo
A demonstration video edited by Shane Mann Ruff The text book provides you with the rushes and shooting script, continuity script and continuity shot list. As you go through the book you are allowed quite a bit of freedom to choose which rush or selection of the rushes to use. The movie allows the reader/user to participate in color correction, grading, building the soundtrack/audio enhancement (I chose to use surround 5.1 utilizing different enhancements as the scenes warranted.), title building, foley (snd fx) , video FX and audio and dialogue re dubs (ADR Files) as needed and evaluated by the user, The course book does an excellent job of teaching, through hands on experience, a great deal of the possibilities of Final Cut Pro X. Although you are not doing the actual production, you come out of this book knowing how to do a majority of the post production necessary to edit a film. My edited version used in transformative use of copyrighted material. |

Prayercast Demo II Aus
This is a sample of video editing I have done for a local mission. Basically, you edit selected approved video to match the 'mood' of the prayer for a country. The music I used is from FCPX Apple Inc library approved and edited to fit the video. I used standard color correction (no additional plug ins) and speed modifications where needed. The hardest part on this particular one was that I had my heart set on using a specific shot at the end of the sun reflection off the water. By editing a gray scale Generator and using a gaussian blur VFX I was able to achieve a readable font. Some of the title work is done in Motion. Although this is my work, this is not yet an official 'prayer cast' video and not associated with one way ministries. (But I do encourage you to pray.) Prayercast Demo Slo2
This is another sample of video editing I did for a local mission. Edited in FCP 7 and Motion. I used standard color correction and speed modifications where needed. The key in these video's is to match the prayer with the visual....a frame can make a huge difference in the recipients emotion. For more information on oneway ministry, visit prayercast.com |

"Handicapped John" (EditStock.com Footage) HD720p
Handicapped John - Edit Stock provides 'practice' footage for editors to hone their craft. You are provided with three camera angles (rushes shot on separate takes) and a script to edit from. Although actors don't follow scripts verbatim, I was able to do a 'mock' ADR on a few edits. This particular edit was good practice in J/L editing as well as continuity editing (watch 'John' 's hands....all over the place....good practice in matching edits.) Fun script and kudos to Editscript.com for the service they provide. Edited version used in transformative and educational use of copyrighted material. |

"SPIN" HD720p
Video using a concept of taking any random idea and making a set time (:60) video spot. Canon T3i w/ 18-55mm Kit lens w/ a .45x Wide Angle adapter. Benro S2 Monopod. Edited on FCP X. Only 'fancy' post was adding some time shifting and the use of '50's style TV' VFX. Music is a stock drum bed cut up and edited as needed. "The Rifle Shuffle "
A video submitted as part of a job bid for the educational web page 'WikiHow". Submissions were given a link to files and criteria restrictions as well as download and submit entry instructions. This particular entry was called an 'Experimental' entry. You were allowed to 'add' a little pizzaz to your entry to show an example of your creativity. Although my original two entries were done in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 , I did this entry in Final Cut Pro X. Simple instructional video to show the finer points of the shuffle.. |

"Anesthesia" (EditStock.com Footage)
Anestashesia - Edit Stock provides 'practice' footage for editors to hone their craft. You are provided with several camera angles (rushes shot on separate takes) and a script to edit from. A small continuity error on Editstocks behalf this time as the Dentist glasses 'disappear' in reverse shots. (If I didn't tell you ...would you have noticed? ) Horn bed at intro and outro is 'reversed' to give it an odd flair. A small bit of Foley added as needed to enhance the feel . Another Fun script and kudos to Editscript.com for the service they provide. Edited version used in transformative and educational use of copyrighted material. Waterfall Glen
Out enjoying a nice nature trip with the family. Shot on a Canon T3i and edited in FCP X. Object for me on this shoot was to show off a few neat angles of the waterfall and edit it utilizing the natural sounds, music bed and edit/transitions to make it as interesting as I could in a limited time allotment. I've seen a few of these types of videos 'over killed' or even 'under killed' ....trying to find the right length and fx makes or breaks a video/shoot. |

Asian Cultural Exhibit
Morton Arboretum. Lisle IL - August 3rd 2014 - Asian Cultural Exhibition. Shot on a Canon T3i Rebel w/ 18-55mm kit lens and edited on FCP X. This is a single camera shoot....I use varying crops of the screen to look like a second camera for close ups is being used. |

Awo and the Snake of Death
More than anything this shows my ability to shoot a 'breaking' story/situation. As my wife and I were out taking pictures at Whalon Lake, we were 'snuck' up on by this 3' + Corn Snake (at least thats what my research found) . Rare for our area. I shot it as best as I could using a dSLR Canon T3i and as a good news videographer knows...'just get the footage...fix it in post' (Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 ). This type of shooting you have to think out a story line in your head and get the matching shots. I was use to video shoots for politicians. ...eh,...snakes, politicians....(you can add your own punch line here.....) |

"Beam Me Up 1"
A training exercise using Final Cut Pro X and chroma key/green screen VFX to have a little fun with 'teach'. Simple yet effective VFX. |

"Zion Lutheran Church, Naperville, IL - Time To Harvest, Time To Build" (1998)
"Time to Harvest, Time to Build" was a capital program at Zion Lutheran Church in 1998. This is the video project I produced at that time. It's been re dubbed using a Canon XL1 miniDV camera and a re dub/mix of the audio (using a Zoom H1) from a VHS tape, with additional production produced on Adobe Premiere Pro . I've included this older production because I had my hands in all the pre production, production and the post production! When you are helping your church raise money....you don't have a big budget...I had no budget! But with God all things are possible and this video is an example of that. I was able to secure Silent Word Media Resources to help with this production. |

"Deep Shades Of Purple- Smoke On The Water - Nite Cap Chicago"
A fan video shared with me of my old tribute band. Audio is from a Zoom H1 sitting at a back table. The original audio file I was given was 'crushed' and I did some work to separate and try to find the vocal mushed in the middle by enhancing the 3900-4200 Hz range. It was only a one camera shoot (and obviously I'm not shooting it since I'm on guitar!) on a basic Canon Power Shot A560 hand held camera so I did a few VFX to see if we could make it just a bit more interesting. ...it does give a bit of '... in the front row'' feel to it... Edited on Adobe Audition CS6 and Final Cut Pro X |

THAILAND (2008) THREE MINUTE THEATER
You know how you hate to sit through someones' home movie or pictures of their trip....you'd love to watch...but just don't have the time. Well...I've solved that for you. Here are close to 1800 photo's all nicely wrapped up in three minutes. You're welcome. Enjoy the show! Shot on a Canon A560 Power Shot and edited on Final Cut Pro X. Music: Mameaw Ao Pai Ao Pai is being used in an educational purpose.....Edited at 29.97fps at 6 shots per frame. |

Eagle Project (Adobe Premier Pro training video)
An Adobe training video example. Given the footage, music bed and VO to work with, assignment to edit in an interesting manner. Edited in Adobe Premier Pro. |

Sunday Afternoon Maze
My wife is amazing. I say this because 1) It's true. 2) It ties in with the 'maze' theme and 3) It's the only way she'll let me continue to keep publishing her life on my portfolio.... This is just a fun video of my better half taking on The Maze at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL. Shot on the Canon T3I with standard Kit lens 18-55mm and edited on FCP X using a wee bit of time revamping to get us through the tedious parts of the maze....I do own a hand held stabilizer....but this is just hand held....achieved by holding your camera out in front with locked elbows and over bend at the knees.....you do what you need to "achieve the shot with what you've got!" ( I was pleased enough with what I had to work with that I felt I did not need to 'overcrop' using FCP Video stabilizer...so I didn't) |
